Accurate Optical, currently ranked 35th among the largest eye centers in the United States, has been providing service to residents on the Eastern Shore since 1956.

The first Accurate Optical office, located in downtown Salisbury, occupied a 300 square foot space and employed three people: business founder Dr. Leonard Jaffe and two helpers. Eventually, Accurate Optical expanded to encompass the entire building as well as several adjacent ones, and in 1968, the company made a move to a building on the southern fringe of town.

Other changes occurred. The optical trade became more fashion-oriented, lens sizes became much larger, and when contact lenses emerged, demand ballooned. Accurate Optical established a position at the forefront of the optical industry's evolution. Accurate Optical followed the trend, while still maintaining a "quality optical care at affordable prices" policy. Contact lenses became profoundly popular and, as business boomed, the public increasingly turned away from more conservative practitioners.

Other opportunities were recognized: the need for more optometric service in the Easton area; the underserved native and tourist population in Ocean City; the chance to expand into Cambridge. Offices were opened in each location.

Technological advances paralleled physical expansion. Accurate Optical was the first eye care and eyewear facility in Maryland to have a non-contact tonometer to measure interocular pressure and, most probably, the first with an auto-refractor. Equipment was purchased to facilitate one-hour service.

As the business grew, so did the need for additional personnel. In 1974, Dr. Steven M. Zeidman, Pennsylvania College of Optometry graduate, joined the practice, looking not only for a professionally fulfilling opportunity, but for a growing, yet family-oriented community as well.

Ten years later, Dr. Charles I. McDonald, a Southern College of Optometry graduate, eager to return to his home state of Maryland, joined the Accurate Optical family.

In 1986, Dr. John F. Lynch Jr., another Pennsylvania College of Optometry alumnus, became part of the practice.

In 1990, when Dr. Jaffe chose to retire, Drs. Zeidman, McDonald and Lynch became Accurate Optical's new owners.

During the past sixteen years, the business has continued to grow and prosper under their management. In 1996, a fifth office opened in Stevensville on Kent Island.

In 2000, a fourth optometrist, Dr. Aaron K. Tarbett, a graduate of Ohio State Univeristy College of Optometry, joined the company's professional team. Dr. Tarbett is currently a part-time associate in the Easton and Stevensville locations.

In 2003, Dr. David F. Miller joined Accurate Optical with 20 years of Optometry experience. A graduate of the Southern College of Optometry, Dr. Miller began working at Accurate Optical in both the Stevensville and Easton locations. In order to provide more doctor coverage for Salisbury residents, Dr. Miller now works in the Salisbury location with Dr. Steven Zeidman. Accurate Optical¬Ěs newest addition to the professional staff is Dr. Kevin E. Johnson, a graduate of Indiana University School of Optometry. Dr. Johnson works in tandem with Dr. McDonald in the Easton location and is the primary doctor in Stevensville.

From its inception and still true today, Accurate Optical has held strong to its goals of service, price and selection. In order to ensure excellence is service, each office is staffed by rigorously-trained front desk personnel, optometric aides, fitting and dispensing opticians, and contact lens technicians. Behind the scenes, both surfacing and finishing laboratory personnel attend to exacting eyeglass fabrication utilizing state-of-the-art equipment. Accounting tends to finances for all locations and insurance experts handle billing and claims. In addition, an MIS specialist oversees the company's Computerized Optical Systems program designed to track optical exams and point-of-sale transactions.

As for selection, Accurate Optical has a large frame selection; displaying more than 5,000 frames. The same is true of contact lens choices, many of which are available at Accurate Optical before any other eye care facility and many are available on a same-day basis.

And, serving still another patient need, Accurate Optical is a partner in a cooperative venture with The Laser Center (TLC) in Annapolis, MD. While TLC surgeons perform the PRK or LASIK procedures, Accurate Optical's optometrists provide pre-procedure testing and evaluation to determine patients' eligibility, plus post-procedure care.

In 2000, Accurate Optical relocated two of its offices. In May 2000, the Salisbury offices moved into a new 7,200 square foot location adjacent to the Eastern Shore's most prominent ophthalmological practice at 31519 Winter Place Parkway. The new location houses corporate headquarters, a full-service laboratory serving not only the local office but the outlying offices as well, and a 2,000 square foot patient service area.

The Ocean City office also moved in late 2000 from 94th Street to Ocean City Square at 118th Street. In addition to these two relocations, the Cambridge and Easton offices were renovated.

In September 2005, Accurate Optical made its first move into the state of Delaware by joining the Azar Eye Institute in the Dr. Pierce Ellis Medical Center Building in downtown Laurel. With the 1,000 square foot office and experienced staff, Accurate Optical looks forward to serving patients of Sussex County.

Accurate Optical accepts most insurance plans, and offers membership discount programs to businesses, churches, senior citizen groups and civic organizations. They also participate in a number of programs designed for patients who are ineligible for insurance coverage and cannot afford necessary eye care nor eye wear.
